Successfully scaling on-demand delivery through our logistics network

By Jannie Appelt, VP Global Logistics, Just Eat Takeaway.com

In recent years, the rapid delivery landscape has continued to evolve and we’ve seen a huge shift in the way people shop. Consumers now expect convenience, accuracy and quick deliveries every step of the way and we’re no stranger to this growing trend at Just Eat Takeaway.com.

To meet evolving expectations around on-demand delivery, we’ve moved from only offering food delivery to venturing into new areas whether that be grocery, healthcare or retail. Diversifying the range of partners we have on our platform has been a huge focus for us so that we can continue to offer our consumers the widest possible choice for quick and easy delivery - usually within 30 minutes. Ensuring we have a best-in-class logistics offering to enable this is key and we’ve seen incredible growth in this space over the last few years. This also means we’ve been able to widen the scope of services we offer through logistics - whether that be offering a last mile delivery service or looking after the entire shopping experience - so our partners don’t have to.

JET Go
As part of our logistics operations, we cover over 1000 different delivery areas in our key markets. This enables us to allow retailers to tap into our powerful, on demand network to meet their customers’ expectations for speed without needing to list on our marketplace. This means partners will continue to look after the end-to-end consumer journey, but we will fulfil the last-mile delivery service, through our offering, called JET Go.

This is becoming one of our core services under logistics and we’ve partnered up with some fantastic brands to cater to their logistics needs. This includes Douglas in Bulgaria and Coles Liquor in Australia, with more to come. At Just Eat Takeaway.com, our partners will always be the heart of our business - so a key objective of our JET Go proposition is to work closely with grocers, retailers and restaurants to ensure we provide a delivery service that caters to their individual needs. This includes empowering them to reach more customers who are looking for speed and leveraging their existing store networks. And we cater to a huge variety of partners. We’re now in a place where any company looking for support in last mile delivery, whether that be a famous brand, a perfumery or a local flower shop, can quickly start delivering using our on demand delivery network.

Shop & Pay
Another great example of how we’re widening the scope of logistics services is our Shop & Pay proposition. With hundreds of thousands of couriers working with us, we’ve recently introduced a new feature in Canada which enables our couriers to take care of the shopping experience. Essentially, with this technology, our couriers shop, pay and deliver on behalf of customers. Our Canadian business, Skip, has launched this proposition with major retailers, including Rexall pharmacy, LCBO, and M&M Food Market and we’re already covering almost 800 locations, with plans to scale this further.

We want to provide the best service to our network and we know that propositions like Shop & Pay bring a host of benefits. This includes retailers not needing to worry about picking or packing orders and enabling consumers to access even more retailers. For couriers, it maximises their earning potential and they have the complete freedom to opt into the types of deliveries they want to do. Orders can be delivered at off-peak hours, outside of our typical rushes tied to breakfast, lunch and dinner, providing couriers with greater flexibility in their schedules.

As a business, we understand that every successful logistics function is only successful because of the couriers delivering on our behalf. So it’s important we recognise the work they put in, work with them to improve their experiences and provide them with the right opportunities. We do this through hosting regular events and engaging with our couriers to gather feedback and make continued improvements.

Overall, we’ve seen huge progress across our logistics function in recent years and this has been integral as we continue to diversify our offering across our markets. From providing consumers with more choice, expanding the reach of our partners or offering our couriers with more opportunities, we look forward to further scaling our operations to deliver everyday convenience for our network.

*Our delivery solutions leverage employed couriers, independently contracted couriers, and at a lesser level, third-party provided couriers depending on the country. Essentially, we continue to operate the model which best suits local market conditions.
