Just Eat Takeaway.com, Europe’s largest online food delivery marketplace, welcomes this week’s announcement from MEP Mrs. Gualmini that an agreement has been reached on its Platform Work Directive.
The Company, which has tens of thousands of employed couriers across Europe, and operates well-known brands such as Lieferando, Just Eat and Thuisbezorgd, has long advocated for a stricter enforcement of existing national law, and for a system in which all platform workers are afforded the rights they deserve. In contrast, companies across the Union continue to prioritise cost savings over affording riders the rights that their very customers usually do enjoy. As a result, the sector is not competing on the same playing field, with some shouldering more employee and societal costs than others.
Both existing national law and the new EU-wide regulation must be enforced to prevent companies with bogus self-employment models from benefiting at the expense of both couriers, who face increasingly precarious conditions, and society itself. Just Eat Takeaway.com is pleased to see that, amongst other things, the agreement will unconditionally afford platform workers access to the rights they deserve.
Just Eat Takeaway.com applauds the steps taken by MEP Mrs. Gualmini and the European Parliament and looks forward to the implementation of this legislation.
