Just Eat Takeaway.com pilots physical-AI ground robotics for doorstep delivery

Just Eat Takeaway.com is partnering with Swiss robotics company RIVR to pilot doorstep delivery of food products with autonomous ground robots. Just Eat Takeaway.com is the first on-demand delivery service to pilot wheeled-legged hybrid robotics equipped with Physical AI in Europe.

The RIVR ground robot is designed for seamless and efficient deliveries, distinguishing itself from other ground robotics by combining wheels for efficient travel with legs for climbing stairs and curbs. Functioning with Physical AI, the robot understands every space, avoiding obstacles like rubbish cans or grass, and safely moves around pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists.

It operates at approximately 15 km per hour, ensuring prompt delivery times. Its robust design allows it to operate reliably in diverse weather conditions, including rain, snow, high heat, and wind. With a 40-litre capacity and an internal wall to prevent spillage, the robot can easily handle large orders, making it a versatile solution for various delivery needs.

The handover process is similar to a courier delivery. A secure locking mechanism guarantees the safe delivery of the order for both the partner and the user. The partner secures the order inside the robot, and the customer unlocks the cargo bin after being notified of its arrival.

The robot has been manufactured to cover long distances safely, and every delivery is monitored real-time from a monitoring centre. It is programmed to instantly stop in emergencies, either automatically or via remote command, and is equipped with lights and a flag to stay highly noticeable during day and night.

The RIVR robot will initially deliver real food orders in Zurich (Switzerland) from local restaurant Zekis World. As the first on-demand delivery company to pilot this type of ground robotics delivery in Europe, Just Eat Takeaway.com plans to introduce more robotic delivery solutions to other European cities later this year, with potential expansion into retail and convenience stores. This new ground robotics delivery, utilising Physical AI, complements our journey into innovative delivery options, following the previously announced drone-delivery service in Ireland, powered by Manna, to further boost operational efficiency.

At Just Eat Takeaway.com, our vision is to empower everyday convenience, and we believe innovation is an important driver in bringing that vision to life. It drives our commitment to exploring, testing and integrating new services and technologies, all aimed at enhancing our proposition and driving an even better experience for our ecosystem. Zornitsa Chugreeva, Senior Global Innovation Director, Just Eat Takeaway.com
Our collaboration with Just Eat Takeaway.com is a glimpse into a future where automation blends naturally into our cities, helping people get what they need, when they need it. Physical AI allows our robots to understand and adapt to the real world. It’s a step toward making autonomous delivery not only efficient, but intuitive, safe, and truly human-centred.
