Just Eat Takeaway.com pilots grocery delivery via its own convenience store in Berlin

Just Eat Takeaway.com N.V. (LSE: JET, AMS: TKWY), one of the world’s largest online food delivery marketplaces, launches a pilot grocery and convenience delivery operation via its own dark store in Berlin. This pilot follows Just Eat Takeaway.com’s successful nationwide rollout of a similar model in Canada, Skip Express Lane.

Lieferando Express opened in Berlin, where Just Eat Takeaway.com will leverage its extensive network of thousands of employed couriers across the city. Available for consumers as ‘Lieferando Express’, the pilot continues the company’s momentum to date in expanding its on-demand grocery delivery proposition. The company is targeting a delivery time of approximately 20 minutes. The service is initially available in a 2 kilometer range from the store located in Berlin Charlottenburg.

Working directly with a range of local vendors and companies such as ROY Kombucha, Berliner Kaffeerösterei and Zeit für Brot, Lieferando Express will offer over 1,000 products, ranging from fresh fruits and bread to household cleaning and baby products. As consumers increasingly value efficiency and convenience in delivery, products will be delivered to consumers right away, maintaining Just Eat Takeaway.com’s high standards of customer service.

The new delivery-only grocery store is expected to create new jobs and bring snacks, household goods, groceries and fresh products to an extensive consumer base in Berlin.

Grocery and convenience represent an incremental market opportunity that further enhances our consumer proposition, drives networking effects and brand loyalty, and improves our delivery fleet utilisation. After a successful roll-out in Canada, the pilot store in Berlin will provide us with more insight about the market potential in Europe. Andrew Kenny, interim COO at Just Eat Takeaway.com.

The announcement follows Just Eat Takeaway.com’s global commitment to expand and build on its extensive existing delivery network, including through convenience grocery operations. Just Eat Takeaway.com has set up a dedicated team for convenience grocery partners such as traditional grocers, online retailers, convenience stores, bakeries and other specialists. Currently the company is already supporting about 25,000 stores globally for some of the most renowned grocery and convenience brands like Albert Heijn, 7-Eleven, Asda, Casino Group, One-Stop, Coop and SPAR.
