This comes as Just Eat is celebrating 20 years of serving customers in the UK, and the appetite for local takeaways remains as strong as ever*, with recent research showing that nearly half (46%) of people prioritise ordering from independent local takeaways, while one in five (20%) order from a local independent at least once a week.
Recent research by Development Economics also shone a light on the contribution that independent takeaways make to the UK - generating £28 billion in annual GVA (Gross Value Added) for the economy and supporting over 897,000 jobs nationwide.
Customers also feel this, with independent food businesses seen as an essential part of UK high streets. Six in ten people (61%) agree that independent takeaways play an important role in the character of their local high street, while almost two-thirds (64%) say high streets would be worse off without independent food businesses.
For twenty years, one of the things our customers have loved most about Just Eat is discovering brilliant local takeaways, whether that’s the best kebab in town, their go-to fish and chips, or a new favourite around the corner. The Just Eat Awards are all about celebrating those local heroes and shining a spotlight on the amazing food and service they offer. We hope by offering 20% off, in our 20th year, even more customers will try these outstanding restaurants and support local favourites.Leigh Phillipson, Commercial Director at Just Eat
Each winner will receive £5,000 cash in addition to £500 credit specifically for marketing support, to give their business a boost and help further drive orders with new and existing customers in their communities.
